Janel Anegbeh is my 3yrs and 2 mths old daughter who is unable to hear or speak; she was diagnosed with bilateral sensoneural deafness as a result of her birth history. She was born a set of twins at 24 weeks, but we lost her twin at birth. Janel had servers jaundice and underwent blood transfusions; spending 100 days at Outreach NICU. After we were discharged from Outreach, as she was growing, we noticed she wasn’t responding to sounds nor moved when her name was mentioned. We visited many ENT specialists to know what the problem was, and she was diagnosed with severe profound hearing loss of both ears. To be honest, since then I have lost my sleep. Just recalling what we went through to keep her alive is a recurrent nightmare. Then this came up ‘loss of hearing’ just when I was happy that my baby is growing. It breaks my heart each day that passes that my baby cannot hear the lullabies I and her brothers sing for her. She doesn't know her name or ever called me mummy; instead she has been in a world of humming and silence. I can't wait to see my daughter hear and call me mummy, and this can only be possible when she gets a cochlear implant which requires surgery. And the doctor says the surgery needs to be done as early as possible so that she can start hearing and learning to speak now that she’s tender. My family has spent a lot caring for her since birth; and the cost of surgery is too expensive for us to self-fund. We are humbly begging for support to cover her surgery and medical bills for cochlear implants. No amount is too little, as it will be deeply appreciated.
